US U20/23 Men’s National Soccer Team Gathered in Germany   by Anthony

For the next two weeks a mix of the US U20 and the U23 National team will be gathered in Germany. The camp will be used to identify the contributors for the US Olympic Soccer team which will try to qualify for the London Olympics next spring.

Newly appointed U23 head coach Caleb Porter will not be in attendance due to prior commitments with the University of Akron’s soccer team. Tab Ramos the new U20 coach and Claudio Reyna the US Youth Technical Director, will have the task of selecting the best from what some say is the strongest youth pool for the US.

All the top prospects for the US are in this camp including Mix Diskerud, Joseph Gyau, Charles Renken, and the much talked about John Anthony Brooks. Brooks is the perfect International centerback with a mix of size, speed, and passing ability. On top of all that, he is left footed.

Another great prospect that could help the full US team in the near future is German-American forward Terrence Boyd who is currently on the U23 team for reigning Bundesliga Champs Borussia Dortmund and on the cusp of breaking into their first team. It is no secret that the US has been looking for an effective forward option since the retirement of Brian McBride.

Even with all the depth that this team has there is still something more amazing still. Timmothy Chandler, Brek Shea, Jozy Altidore, Juan Agudelo, Daniel Williams, Alfredo Morales, and Bill Hamid are all US first teamers that are eligible to integrate into the group for qualification.

The U20/23 is currently scheduled to play this Friday and will face the Bochum reserves at 11am followed by Azerbaijan U21′s at 3pm. Then on Tuesday the US U20/U23 team will play Leverkusen U23′s at 2:30pm then Leverkusen U19′s at 5pm.

Here is just a sample of on potential lineup the US could boast –

Altidore
Shea-Adu-Gil
Diskerud-Williams
Cunningham- Brooks-Kitchen-Chandler
Hamid

Granted this lineup is all speculation and other players might develop quicker or impress more in camp. The bottom line is that this will be a very strong team put forth by the US for the Olympics. Several of the players will also put themselves in contention for spots on the full US Men’s National team roster. There is no denying that the future looks very bright for US Soccer.

There is no doubt that Bill Shankly was one of the greatest managers of all time. The former miner took over at Second Division Liverpool in 1959. The changes he made there were nothing short of revolutionary, and few would argue that it was he who transformed the sleeping giant into the great club it is now. To the people of the city he was a hero they could relate to and even today, more than 25…
